How to Look and Feel Your Best

In our fast-paced, manic world we can often lose sight of the big picture. The little details stress us out, and we spend nights tossing and turning, worrying about presentations and promotions. But does that really make us happy? How many people have lain on their deathbeds wishing that they had spent more time in the office?
Ironically, when we pay attention to ourselves, and to taking care of ourselves, everything else tends to fall into place - work included. Clients want happy, well-groomed executives to work with. Customers want to be served with a smile. Everyone gravitates towards the person who radiates happiness.
Here are a few quick tips on how to be that person. (I warn you, they're regular ones. The ones everyone has told you time and again. But let this be the time you pay attention to them, and change your lifestyle and your life.)

1. Take care of your skin and hair
It doesn't matter whether you fork over thousands to have professionals do it, or whether you mix up DIY masks and conditioners at home. The important thing is to take the ten or twenty minutes out of your day, and do so! I usually use a deep conditioner every time I wash my hair, and apply a mask once or twice a week. (Unless otherwise advised by my doctors.) It is a bit of a bother to remember, I will admit. However the way you feel when you can rush out the door without really needing much makeup is worth the time spent. You feel like a superstar!

2. Meditate
This used to be optional. Meditation was one of those things that weren't really necessary. The pressure on us today has completely changed that. We're all rushing to be somewhere, get something or meet someone. Meditation is now essential to our wellbeing. You need the time to sit down, and forget the cares of the day. Taking ten or twenty minutes out of your morning or evening to breathe deeply and calm your mind might be the best investment of your time.
If you're a rubbish meditator, or get even more stressed over whether or not you're doing it properly, take a solo walk. You could stroll by the sea or by a lake. Or take a walk in a park or in a garden. The idea is to be surrounded by nature. The soothing sounds of the birds or the gentle crash of the waves will work wonders on an overstressed mind.

3. Indulge Yourself
This isn't an excuse to bankrupt yourself in a mall, or inhale the entire two kilo chocolate cake. But do allow yourself treats and rewards. We put such a lot of restrictions on ourselves, in the hope of making ourselves better, that we sometimes forget that we can't play by the rules every single minute. So have a slice of chocolate cake. Buy that new MAC lipstick. And don't beat yourself up when you have three pizza slices instead of the two that you're 'allowed'. Life truly is short. So do enjoy yourself.

4. Move that body
Do something physical at least every alternate day. Maybe you'll play in the garden with your kids. Perhaps you'll walk the dog. You could call up a few friends and head off on a stroll together. It doesn't need to be in the gym or a formal exercise class. But get that body moving. You'll have more energy. You'll be more focused. And yeah, keep it up for an extended period of time, and you'll look better too.

5. Enjoy your Hobbies
Maybe you love music, or art. Perhaps sports are your thing. Or maybe ruined castles bring you joy. Whatever you love doing, make sure that you do that as often as you possibly can. (Once a week is good.) If you can't travel to see ruins, you can read a good history book. Maybe you can't play football. But you can watch it. Go watch a play, wander through an art gallery or a museum, or find some friends and a garden and get up a game of cricket. Doing the things you love will bring a glow to your face and to your soul.

6. Spend time with Loved Ones
They could be friends. Perhaps they're family. Or maybe it's just someone you'd like to get to know better. Whatever and whoever it is, take the time out of your busy week to spend with the people who make you laugh, and who care for you. A strong support network can take you through the worst times and circumstances. No matter what Life throws at you, if you have people who have you back, you'll make it through. Make the time to foster those connections. Don't be that person who lies on their deathbed wishing they had spent more time with their loved ones. Switch off the computer, and do it today.

Let's drink to that!! Cheers!

Till next time,

MumbaiGirl.
