The temps are rising, and it's time to tuck away our jumpers and jackets and get into spring/summer mode. With the hotter days, come lighter fabrics in brighter, more cheery colours. Looser, more relaxed fits in clothing remind us that holidays and vacations are just around the corner. So what to buy and what to avoid when it comes to the new season? These are my top five picks for SS18.
Sheer/Mesh/Translucent Fabrics.
The lace back on this Zara romper is a prime example of what I mean when I say that this is a very wearable trend, if you do it right.
This Massimo Dutti top has two layers of chiffon, meaning your bra is NOT on display.
I'd recommend Zara and H&M for this trend. They have some lovely pieces. Forever 21 has some awesome lace tops too.
Tasselled Earrings.
It's lined, so you're not left to rely solely on the raffia. Plus it's got a zip, so nothing spills out. I'm completely in love with this bag. Expect to see it all over my Instagram this summer! I also love the gold hardware. It just elevates the whole 'picnic basket bag' look into something far more elegant.
Sheer/Mesh/Translucent Fabrics.
This is one of THE key trends this season. Sheer dresses, mesh tees and blouses and translucent everything has been all over the runways and is now in store for you to buy. Given that we live in India - aka a country not so friendly towards flashing bras and a lot of flesh, this is a slightly difficult trend to pull off. I'll go into depth in on how to wear this trend in another post. For now I'll say, choose your pieces well. Patterned fabrics, layers of chiffon and lace panels all help you wear the trend without having ever guy you pass ogle you.

Tasselled Earrings.
Although I've seen plenty of stores put out huge, geometric earrings with a variety of large, coloured stones, the ones I've seen on models and influencers have all been tasselled. There's really not too much to say about this trend - either you buy tasselled earrings or you don't. My advice would be to skip the earrings that are just long tassels and buy ones that have some metal details as well. Tassels will date quickly, but the details mean you'd be able to wear them long after the trend's sell-by date. The ones above are from Forever New. They come in a dusky pink shade as well.
These by Aldo are a few seasons old but they're what I mean when I'm talking about tassels that can be worn even after the trend dies down. Forever 21 has some nice ones along these lines - and they're cheap too.
Straw/Jute/Raffia Bags.
The bag of this season looks like you're about to head on a picnic. Yes, there's no getting around it. If you want to be on trend, you'd better have one of these. The large, circular ones - available at Zara and Mango - are the ones everyone and their uncle and their uncle's uncle will be sporting this summer. However, I don't feel they're very practical for anything aside from Instagram pics - and the beach. I'm a huge fan of this bucket bag from Zara. It's on trend, but the faux leather bits make it suitable for nearly all occasions. The crossbody strap is practical and its large enough to fit nearly everything.
Pleated Skirts.
They're back!! (I'm not sure if they ever went away though) In pleather, leather, metallics, lace and chiffon, pleated skirts are having a moment. They've been around a while, and so if you've been following trends, you should have a few of them already. I chose to showcase this one since pastels have always been a spring/summer colour trend, and because of the lace panel which means that this skirt is three trends in one piece. This is from Zara's 2017 autumn collection, but you needn't worry. Skirts like this are all over the high street stores. You'll find one to suit your style and budget very easily.
Cat-eyed Sunglasses.
As I've already done a post on sunnies, I'm not going to get too deeply into this trend. (You can read that post here) Cat-eyed sunnies are huge this spring/summer. You can go for the classic cat-eyes or a shape with cat-eyes. Squares and circular lenses with cat-eyes are the most popular, but I've seen a few nice aviators with cat-eyes too. Needless to state, buy these from your nearest budget store. (H&M and Forever 21 are the best) This is a very niche trend. Unless cat-eyes suit you (and frankly they suit very few face shapes), this is something you'll want to wear while it's hot and then toss. Don't waste your cash playing with this trend.
These, I feel, are the key trends going into this SS18 season. Of course, there are some perennials that come around year after year. The spring/summer classics is something I'll talk about in next Thursday's post. Monday will be the next in my 'Riverdale looks' series. I'll be tackling Veronica Lodge's style.
Till next time,
MumbaiGirl.
