Today was supposed to be a post about the spring/summer 18 trends. Unfortunately, I'm waiting for the delivery of a key piece. And so my post will have to wait till Thursday. In the meanwhile, I've been binge-watching the latest teen series from Hollywood - the CW's Riverdale.
Every generation has its iconic teen show - from My So Called Life to Gossip Girl, we've all shipped the characters, coveted their lives and tried to copy their styles. While some shows made it easy - Dawson's Creek was a breeze - others have been near impossible - Blair's designer filled wardrobe, anyone? You would think, given that the Riverdale characters have clothes that come from stores like H&M and Topshop replicating their looks would be a cinch. But that's not quite the case. The styles are very specific to cooler climes and western cultures. Let’s
be honest, wearing an exact replica of Cheryl’s clothing is only possible if
you’re headed to a club. So what does one do in Mumbai’s sweltering heat when
Veronica is your style icon? Fear not. MumbaiGirl has all the answers – as
usual. I’ll give you a breakdown of Cheryl, Veronica and Betty’s styles and how
to duplicate them in this not so western, much hotter city. Let’s begin, in no
particular order, with Elizabeth Cooper.
Repressed,
good girl Betty has the most wearable style of all. The tomboy meets preppy
look that she sports is one that can be adjusted to fit all but the most formal
of occasions. Unfortunately, her love of cardigans, fitted knitwear and
sweaters is designed to strike fear into any Mumbaikar’s heart. Hands up anyone
who wants to layer a cardigan over a tee in 30 degrees plus temps. Yeah,
thought not. How does one tweak it for our weather?
Her most iconic look is quite simple: skinny jeans, ballet flats, a tank top and a cardigan. All you need to do for our weather is substitute the knitted cardigan for a much thinner one or choose one of the lace or mesh jackets that are a huge trend at the moment. I chose this one from Zara that's super lightweight. The tank top is H&M, the shoes are an old pair from Next and the jeans are Zara as well.
Another wearable look is her jeans and a blouse one. Once again I've incorporated an S/S trend and chosen a sheer polka dot blouse from Zara. The jeans were bought in France and my shoes are trainers from H&M. You could substitute a cotton or linen blouse with a pastel floral print and it would be a very Betty look.
My last look is her dungaree one. It's one that you really have to tweak to make it wearable in our weather. I've skipped the denim overalls entirely in favour of linen ones from Vero Moda. (I bought them one size larger than I usually wear, and that makes them so much more breathable in summer) I've kept with the long sleeve theme in a long sleeved t-shirt. But if temps keep rising, I'd advise you to opt for a sheer or lace long sleeved blouse underneath. My shoes are basic Converse.
Betty's hairstyles are very simple to pull off. A ponytail is an absolute must in summer anyway.
And her half up, half down style is equally simple to do.
Her earrings are always small - I've gone for tiny hoops - and she occasionally wears a thin gold chain with a key pendant.

If you want to replicate her make up, it's very basic: mascara, pink blush and a coral glossed lip.
And there you go! (Jugheads you'll have to find and provide yourself)
Till next time,
MumbaiGirl.
